This parable was to convince some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. God sees with what disposition and design we come to him in holy ordinances.
What the Pharisee said, shows that he trusted to himself that he was righteous. We may suppose he was free from gross and scandalous sins. All this was very well and commendable. Miserable is the condition of those who come short of the righteousness of this Pharisee, yet he was not accepted; and why not? He went up to the temple to pray, but was full of himself and his own goodness; the favour and grace of God he did not think worth asking.
Let us beware of presenting proud devotions to the Lord, and of despising others. The publican’s address to God was full of humility, and of repentance for sin, and desire toward God. His prayer was short, but to the purpose; God be merciful to me a sinner.
Blessed be God, that we have this short prayer upon record, as an answered prayer; and that we are sure that he who prayed it, went to his house justified; for so shall we be, if we pray it, as he did, through Jesus Christ.
He owned himself a sinner by nature, by practice, guilty before God. He had no dependence but upon the mercy of God; upon that alone, he relied. And God’s glory is to resist the proudand give grace to the humble.
Justification is of God in Christ; therefore the self-condemned, and not the self-righteous, are justified before God.
Please remember these are the words of a humble servant doing the bidding of our Father. I would ask if you are being blessed by these articles pass them on to as many others as possible so they may be blessed and share their blessings as well.

“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4). OPENING STATEMENT by Robert Yahweh has been calling His children back to His word and teachings, calling us out of the Worldly religious systems and their mediocre lessons. Movements are permeating the worldly assemblies, and our society is sliding into evil through many delusions and precepts. I am sorrowed and troubled that so many our Father has and is now calling out to as Matthew Henry put it are “Enemies of the Gospel” in his commentary of Apostle Paul in Romans 9:1. As did Paul state to the Gentiles, “I state the truth in Christ,” So am I relating to all who will read this warning which was given to me by the “Holy Spirit.” I now understand why my complete apprehension, great sorrow, and heaviness which has been filling me spiritually and emotionally. At the same time, I pray and meditate on the content of this message and how to deliver it. This message has come over the past months in parts to be discerned and shared with all. Some may not be prepared to hear the “Trumpet’s Warning.” Who are God’s children? How do we receive the “blessing of Abraham”? Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us: Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree Gal.3:13 so we might receive the promise of the Spirit through Faith. For after Faith comes, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by Faith in Yeshua. Gal.3:25-26. Please, I see as the Apostle did in Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Yeshua as the image of His Father an eternal spirit. Knowing there are unbelievers among those who have received the Spirit of Christ through Faith recognized the blessings of Abraham and now know of God’s covenants and His Laws by a “repentant heart.” Greetings to all, and to all, I offer this prayer before we embark on our journey into the darkness encompassing the world. OPENING PRAYER by Robert Heavenly Father Hear my petition as I place it before your throne, asking to bring upon those now fully armoured, instructed and fully dedicated to your service. Through the Holy Spirit reveal unto to them, Father your gifts reserved for the elect. So they are received willingly and share them, Father, with those they will attract with your light as Beacons out of the darkness as Fisher’s of Men. Bring unto them Father your promises through service, Lord. Place upon them Father discernment, understanding and especially your covering of protection. I pray this in the name of Yeshua (Jesus Christ). Amen and Amen. DISCERNMENT: Thequality of beingable to grasp and comprehendwhat is obscure: skill in discerning: an act of perceiving or discerningsomething. The following description falls into the definition, as mentioned above. Saul was a man of the Pharisees, bred to learning, a scholar. Let it not be said that all of Christ’s followers are unlearned and ignorant men. The principles of the Pharisees, and the peculiarities of their sect, were directly contrary to the Spirit of Christianity. Yet, there were some in whom even those high thoughts were cast down and brought into obedience to Christ. The grace of Christ can subdue the greatest opposition. Paul preached a crucified Yeshua (Jesus) in plain language. He told the people that Yeshua (Jesus,) who was crucified at Jerusalem, was the Son of God and Saviour of men and that all who would be saved must repent of their sins and believe in him and submit to his governing and laws. This truth needed no artificial dress; it shone out with the most excellent majesty in its own light and prevailed in the world by its divine authority, and the demonstration of the Spirit, without any human, helps. The plain preaching of a crucified Yeshua (Jesus) was more potent than all the oratory and philosophy of the Gentile world. Paul preached the gospel, and the cross of Christ: Not with the wisdom of words (1Co 1:17}), the enticing words of “man’s wisdom” (1Co 2:4}), the flourish of oratory, or the accuracies of philosophical language, upon which the Greeks so much prided themselves, and which seem to have been the peculiar recommendations of some of the heads of the faction in this church that most opposed Paul. He did not preach the gospel in this manner, lest the cross of Christ should be of no effect, lest the success should be ascribed to the force of art, (Obedient Heart) and not of truth. Not to the plain doctrine of a crucified Yeshua (Jesus), but to the powerful oratory of those who spread it, and hereby the honour of the cross be diminished or eclipsed. Paul had been bred up himself in Jewish learning at the feet of Gamaliel, but in preaching the cross of Christ, he laid his knowledge aside with a “Repentant heart.” CLOSING STATEMENT by Robert Paul points out there were those being Jews who expected their Messiah to be a great temporal prince, and therefore would never own one who made so mean an appearance in life and died so accursed a death for their deliverer and king. They despised him and looked upon him as execrable, because he was hanged on a tree, and because he did not gratify them with a sign to their mind, though his divine power shone out in innumerable miracles. He was to the Greeks foolishness. They laughed at the story of a crucified Saviour and despised the apostles’ way of telling it. They sought for wisdom. They were men of wit and reading, men that had cultivated arts and sciences, and had, for some ages, been in a manner the very mint of knowledge and learning. There was nothing in the plain doctrine of the cross to suit their taste, nor humour their vanity, nor gratify a curious and wrangling temper. They entertained it, therefore with scorn and contempt. What, hope to be saved by one that could not save himself! And trust in one who was condemned and crucified as a malefactor, a man of low birth and poor condition in life, and cut off by so vile and unrespectable a death! This was what the pride of human reason, and learning could not relish. The Greeks thought it little better than stupidity to receive such a doctrine, and pay this high regard to such a person: and thus were they justly left to perish in their pride and obstinacy. I ask all to liken back to the definition of Discernment, The quality of beingable to grasp and comprehendwhat is obscure: skill in discerning: an act of perceiving or discerningsomething. By teaching, in the manner, Paul did and using the gift of discernment, we who have the Spirit of God with us. Are now able to recognize those in the darkness today who walk under the same delusions as the Jews and Greeks of his time did. Satan uses pride and obstinacy to ensnare and destroy, through worldly wisdom I call “Brain Candy!” Now using our understanding and knowledge of whatwe are competing with to bring God’s truth forward reveals using the same approach as Paul did is the most effective. Discernment is a powerful tool allowing us to step forward with a “repentant heart.” To demonstrate with sincerity to dispel the myths surrounding those walking in a cloud worldly pride and obstinacy. With understanding, all we have been commissioned by Yeshua (Jesus) to do for those walking in this cloud of delusions, is by a sound demonstration of God’s love, compassion and forgiveness plant the seeds of discernment to dispel the “Brain Candy” seen as contempt and foolishness. Knowing they, desire wisdom our demonstration of how Yeshua (Jesus) through the Holy Spirit fills our lives with Spiritual wisdom. Is far superior to their worldly wisdom. Along with the ultimate benefit of eternal life could be an answer for them if they use Faith to gain Discernment to recognize what they are rejecting is God’s Love and Compassion, which will free them into a pearl of greater wisdom, freedom. CLOSING PRAYER by Robert Heavenly Father, as we bow before your throne and lay our petitions before you, we ask you to hear our prayers. As our days become more treacherous and dangerous, we pray Lord for your guidance. We recognize Father those who desire to harm or prevent us from doing your work, they do not accept you or your compassion, forgiveness, or love. We give praise Lord for the protection you place us under and acknowledge You alone are our helper and uphold our souls. We know Father, you will reward evil unto our enemies, cutting them off in your truth. We know Father it is You who will deliver us from all sin. This we give thanks for in the name of your Son, Yeshua (Jesus Christ), Amen, and Amen. This picture represents the storm our stand and walk will be on our horizon, but we know as God’s children, Yeshua is right next to us as a comforter. But as well the light which defeats darkness. Hebrews 13:6 “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” Blessings to all, and may you be filled with Yeshua’s peace, love, compassion, and strength. Robert.

PRE-AMBLE by Robert The following defines what I call “MIND CANDY” it’s a quote from “Placing My Foot In Yeshua’s Footprint” published June/17/2017 and I believe it fits our current spiritual atmosphere. ” The teachings being received in many of what are being called churches today, represent weekly entertainment centers or gathering places for like-minded fellowship and edification of the worldly [god] most have come to worship. An image made like to corruptible man which involves issues affecting the environment, as well as political and social. They give the appearance of being an assembly (Church) and in reality, are headed up by a hireling teacher leading a flock of deluded followers. Each week the hirelings attend a meeting of hireling teachers who participate in a group meeting usually a Thursday, to lay out and agree on their collective sermon to uplift their worldly [god] of love. They reap from those who have become merchandise in the name of their worldly [god]. In reality, it only personifies the worldly image they have created and accepted as their [god] (Romans 1:21) Because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful: but became vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was darkened. Romans 1:22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. Which gives no edification to their spiritual relationship with Yeshua nor does it prepare them for any spiritual battles which may lay ahead. Yeshua taught in parables because it made the instructions easier. Parables can be used to convince our adversaries to step down and brings reproofs closer, causing us to become more aware and to reprove ourselves. Yeshua knows our weaknesses, however, and wants us to recognize them and fervently change them. Remember there can be no enmity before God, not one. Check to see what Political Correctness has brought into your assemblies and the presence of God, as Sin. 1John 2:15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man, love the world. The love of the Father is not in him.
OPENING PRAYER by Robert. Heavenly Father, receive our cries and pleas for your righteousness to be with us so we might not accept the delusions, trappings, and allures of the world. Bring
Discernment to us, Lord, through the Holy Spirit that we might bolster our walk within your word. Fill us with wisdom so we might face our enemies crafty ways, subtle trappings and rebuke them through it. Open our eyes, Father to the evil hidden behind the beauty being presented. Bless us with heavenly fruits and sustenance that we may go on in your foot-steps. This we pray in the name of Yeshua Amen and Amen.
OPENING STATEMENT by Robert
Is it wrong to look into the stars and wonder about our origin? Are there other life forms in the universe? Are we descendants of an alien race? Have you ever wondered about the validity of evolution or questioned creationism? How did the Egyptians build the pyramids?
The world is full of “MIND CANDY” offered as Philosophies which feed into conceitedness, complacency, fantasies, deceptions, behaviors meant to fool or trick, as an example, Climate Change, Globalism, Socialism, and many other misleading frauds too numerous to name. My question, “why do we need to know the answers,” other than to satisfy our human curiosity?
What benefit does having the answers to these questions bring to our spiritual walk into Eternal life or in developing our relationship with Yeshua? Would we not reap more benefit from this amount of wasted time spent chasing after those answers? By seeking more profound discernment in Yeshua’s words allowing us to draw closer in our personal relationship with him? Learning from Yeshua’s examples and teachings through the Holy Spirit how to apply what we have learned in our daily walk through this life into the eternal Life ahead. I see the opening questions as Satans diversionary tactic using our human shortcoming called curiosity. I call it “MIND CANDY” pure and simple, a mental diversion from seeking the truth, and leading nowhere but to the broad path of destruction and satisfying our curiosity under the guise of gathering worldly wisdom. The enemy plays on complacency within the ranks of Believers. Satan uses our humanistic traits against mankind with little effort and is usually successful in those temptations placed before them. The one trait which is entirely predominate, many believers stumble on is their pride in the fashion of their walk. Some are puffed up, many are learned and able to discern, but closed to learning or furthering their walk as they believe they have arrived and are at heavens door. Thus their personal relationship with Yeshua becomes stagnant. I see many who think they walk with Yeshua falling into a routine of service, believing this makes them Holy and Pious.
Please, we have no guarantees, in the article, NARROW IS THE WAY! ARE YOU UP TO IT? (Published July 29, 2017). Paul revealed this when he called for his followers to be constantly working out their salvation. As even he feared not being recognized by Yeshua. “Paul had another reason namely, “that he might be himself a partaker of the benefits he taught” (1 Corinthians 9:23). Apostle though he was, he had his salvation to work out. He was not himself saved by proclaiming salvation to others, any more than the baker is fed making bread for others, or the physician kept in health by prescribing for others.” Paul also pointed out as believers developing our personal relationship with Yeshua we will discover the promise of salvation and walking under grace encourages us to continue seeking the truth to work out our Salvation and recognize what our future position in Eternity could be with Yeshua. Matthew Henry in his commentary on Luke 22:28 describes what lies ahead and what to expect “How unbecoming is the worldly ambition of being the greatest, to the character of a follower of Yeshua, who took upon him the form of a servant, and humbled himself to the death of the cross! On the way to eternal happiness, we must expect to be assaulted and sifted by Satan. If he cannot destroy, he will try to disgrace or distress us. Nothing more certainly forebodes a fall, in a professed follower of Yeshua, than self-confidence, with disregard to warnings, and contempt of danger. Unless we watch and pray always, we may be drawn in the course of the day into those sins which we were in the morning most resolved against. If believers were left to themselves, they would fall; but they are kept by the power of God, and the prayer of Yeshua.” Like Yeshua who knew the Samaritan woman was in need, we will experience those coming into our lives, who have been drawn by our light, who have a need as well.
In the article, NARROW IS THE WAY! ARE YOU UP TO IT? (Published July 29, 2017). I alluded “the Holy Spirit was revealing, which I believe is very important to discern when dealing with those who are being drawn out of the darkness through our light. “The Holy Spirit in John 1:9 that was the true light, which lighteth “everyman” that cometh into the world. He relates, not just those who come to Salvation have received the “light of Yeshua” but “all men do“ they just don’t recognize it, John 1:10 (He was in the world, and the worldwas made by him, and the world knew him not). When Yeshua took the time to minister to the woman from Samaria it was on a personal level, he set the multitudes aside and focused on this lost soul. Matthew Henry (1662 – 1774) relates to this “How the preventing grace of God sometimes brings people unexpectedly under the means of conversion and salvation. He is found of them that sought him not. We are being exposed to the same teaching Yeshua brought forward to His disciples How glorious an achievement it is to help to save one soul from death. And we have that template right in front of us to practice. Now having a clearer vision of what to expect from our walk as “Modern Day Disciples.” And having been shown how Satan will attack and what and who he is going to use as his allies. In the article “IF YOU KNEW WHO YOU WERE TALKING TO?” published Aug 8, 2017, I made the following statement “I have always maintained that no one comes into our lives by accident it is always for a purpose, we just don’t know what that purpose is until exposed by Yeshua.” These events will occur because Yeshua knows we are now informed, equipped and ready to deal with them. The realization every person born into the world has the light of Yeshua in him, some not understanding, but some knowing and not excepting that fact. I believe our task as “Modern Day Disciples” through being living examples and living what we speak, as Yeshua has set as the example, will reflect Yeshua’s light through us into the darkness to awaken His light in any who see it through our example. However, we must heed the departing message Yeshua left the disciples before passing to the outer life. We find it in the Expository Commentary “Yeshua pauses in this Gospel, to correct certain dissonances of mind and soul, of thought and feeling, which put us in a wrong attitude towards our fellows. He forbids us to sit in judgment upon others. Yeshua says “Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: and condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned.” (Luke 6:37). This does not mean we close our eyes with voluntary blindness, working our way through life as moles; nor does it mean we keep our opinions in a state of flux, not allowing them to crystallize into thought, or to harden into human speech. We must be cautious that in our unconscious judgment we pass upon the actions of others, with our condemnation of the wrong, we pass our sentence upon the wrongdoer, mentally ejecting him from the courtesies and sympathies of life. There is another judging that the command of Yeshua condemns, that is the hasty and the false judgments we pass on the motives and lives of others, How apt we are to depreciate the worth of others who do not happen to belong to our circle!
Matthew Henry (1662 – 1774) reveals the answer which will settle our unconscious judgments, “Yeshua’s commendation of his disciples for their faithfulness to him and this was honor enough for them. They needed not to strive for any greater. You are they who have continued with me in my temptations, you are they who have stood by me and stuck to me when others have deserted me and turned their backs on me. What many don’t realize the disciples committed many mistakes and were guilty of weaknesses, they were defective in their duty. They were very dull and forgetful. And often blundered. Yet their master passes all by and forgets it he does not upbraid them with their infirmities but gives them this memorable testimonial, “You are they who have continued with me.” Thus does he praise at parting, to show how willing he is to make the best of those whose hearts he knows to be upright with him.
CLOSING COMMENTS by Robert
Our Lord gave notice of a very significant change of circumstances now approaching. The disciples must not expect that their friends would be kind to them as they had been. They must now expect that their enemies would be more fierce than they had been, and they would need weapons. The apostles misunderstood Yeshua thinking he meant real weapons, but the Holy Spirit is showing his “Modern Day Disciples” he was speaking only of the weapons of Spiritual Warfare. The sword of the Spirit is the Sword with which the disciples of Yeshua must furnish themselves.
We have learned even though we might stumble, “as did the Apostles,” at times in our walk if we continue as they did standing by Yeshua’s side he will be there for us. I looked into 1Corinthians 10:13 for my answer and strength going forward. Here is what I found “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
What more assurance do we need knowing Yeshua is there supporting us even when we stumble, there is a pathway open for us to upright ourselves and continue on shining our light into the darkness to find that one lost soul. “GET BEHIND ME SATAN”
CLOSING PRAYER by Robert
Father in heaven we humbly thank you Lord for all which you have endured in our name. The patience you have shown as we go forward in our learning and acceptance of your gifts. Lord open our minds to strengthen our will so we may stand against the wiles of our enemies. Teach us how to use your sword of righteousness as we move forward in your name. “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. v.14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.“
PRE-AMBLE by Robert.
In the last Article “GOD SAID WHAT IS THIS THOU HAST DONE?” It showed the importance of working out our Salvation and reconnecting with God. In this article we find the Holy Spirit teaching the importance of continued personal growth in our Salvation but points out, for it to show any value in God’s eyes, it must be shared. We must not let our flesh tempt us to become slack or overconfident in our walk. The previous article revealed the importance of reconnecting and obtaining God’s light as “Modern Day Disciples.” and reflecting it into the darkness of the world.
Adam Clarke (1760 – 1832) comments on the work God puts into our soul to demonstrate our obedience to His calling which sets the tone for this article. “Ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh – If the Spirit of God dwells in and rules your heart, the whole carnal mind will be destroyed; and then, not only carnal ordinances will be abandoned, but also the works and propensities of the flesh.”
Matthew Henry’s (1662 -1774) comments advocate Adam Clarke’s comments on Galatians 5 and reveal’s the depth and what must never go missing for us to function in the Spirit demonstrating our obedience to God’s calling. “Grace includes God’s good-will towards us, and his good work upon us; and peace, all that inward comfort, or outward prosperity, which is really needful for us. They come from God the Father, as the Fountain, through Yeshua. But observe, first grace, and then peace; there can be no true peace without grace. Yeshua gave himself for our sins, to make atonement for us: this the justice of God required, and to this, he freely submitted.“
OPENING PRAYER by Robert
Heavenly Father I want to thank you for showing us the real depth of our faith. I petition you, Father, for wisdom to be upon all those reading this article deepen their discernment and understanding. Father bring them the knowledge of the gifts of Heaven. And how to obtain the fruits of everlasting life. I pray this in your name in the name of Yeshua AMEN and AMEN.
OPENING STATEMENT by Robert
If we care to act under the guidance and power of the blessed Spirit, though we may not be freed from the stirrings and oppositions of the corrupt nature which remains in us, it shall not have dominion over us. Believers are engaged in a conflict, in which they earnestly desire that grace may obtain full and speedy victory. And those who want this to give themselves up to be led by the Holy Spirit, are not under the law as a covenant of works, nor exposed to its awful curse. Their hatred of sin, and desires after holiness show that they have a part in the salvation of the gospel. The works of the flesh are many and manifest. And these sins will shut men out of heaven. Yet, what numbers, calling themselves believers, live in these, and say they hope for heaven!
The fruits of the Spirit, or of the renewed nature, which we are to do, are named. And as the apostle had chiefly called works of the flesh, not only hurtful to men themselves, but tend to make them so to one another, so here he primarily notices the fruits of the Spirit, which are typical to make believers agreeable one to another, as well as to make them happy. The fruits of the Spirit plainly show that such are led by the Spirit. By describing the works of the flesh and fruits of the Spirit, we are told what to avoid and oppose, and what we are to cherish and cultivate; and this is the sincere care and endeavour of all real Believers walking as Modern Day Disciples. Matthew Henry (1662 -1774) relates to Modern Day Disciples who it is we are going to confront and what appears to them as an appealing walk through life.
Many excuse themselves from the work of religion, though they may make a show, and profess it. Imposing upon others, yet they deceive themselves if they think to impose upon God, who knows their hearts as well as actions; and as he cannot be deceived, so he will not be mocked. Our present time is seed time; in the other world, we shall reap as we sow now. As there are two sorts of sowing, one to the flesh, and the other to the Spirit, so will the reckoning be hereafter. Those who live a carnal, sensual life, must expect no other fruit from such a course than misery and ruin. But those who, under the guidance and influences of the Holy Spirit, live a life of faith in Yeshua, and abound in Believer’s graces, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. We are all very apt to tire on duty, particularly in doing good. We should carefully watch and guard against it. Only perseverance in well-doing is the reward promised. Here is an appeal to all to do good in their places. We should take care to do good in our lifetime, and make this the business of our lives. Especially when fresh occasions offer, and as far as our power reaches.
Adam Clarke’s Commentary on Galatians 5:19 -21 describes what we as Modern Day Disciples will face when encountering Satan’s prisoners. As well, we must ascertain, just how quickly we could fall victim to the temptations, Matthew Henry eluded to if we let our guard down. The Holy Spirit is going to lead us to these prisoners so we might demonstrate through our actions and examples within our walk how God’s love and compassion will open the door to eternal life with Him.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest. By flesh, we are to understand the evil and fallen state of the soul. No longer under the guidance of God’s Spirit and right reason. But under the animal passions; and they are even rendered more irregular and turbulent by the influence of sin. So that man is in a worse state than the brute. And so all-commanding is this evil nature that it leads men to all kinds of crimes. And among them the following, which are manifest – known to all, and most prevalent; and, though your law most solemnly forbids these, the observance of its ordinances gives no power to overcome them and provides no pardon for the guilt and condemnation produced by them.
Adultery – Μοιχεια· Illicit connection with a married person. This word is wanting in this place in the best MSS., versions, and fathers; the next term often comprehending both.
Fornication – Πορνεια· Illicit connection between single or unmarried persons; yet often signifying adultery also.
Uncleanness – Ακαθαπσια· Whatever is opposite to purity; probably meaning here, as in Romans 1:24; 2 Corinthians 12:21, unnatural practices; sodomy, bestiality.
Lasciviousness – Ασελγεια· Whatever is contrary to chastity; all lewdness. Verse 20Idolatry – Worshipping of idols; frequenting idol festivals; all the rites of Bacchus, Venus, Priapus, etc., which were common among the Gentiles.
Witchcraft – Φαρμακεια, from φαρμακον a drug or poison; because in all spells and enchantments, whether true or false, drugs were employed. As a drug, φαρμακον, might either be the means of removing evil, or inflicting one, etymologists have derived it from φερον ακος, bringing ease, or φερον αχος, producing pain. So spells and incantations were sometimes used for the restoration of the health; at others, for the destruction of an enemy. Sometimes, these φαρμακα were used to procure love; at other times, to produce hatred.
Hatred – Εχθραι· Aversions and antipathies, when opposed to brotherly love and kindness.Variance – Ερεις· Contentions, where the principle of hate proceeds to open acts; hence contests, altercations, lawsuits, and disputes in general.Emulations – Ζηλοι· Envies or emulations; that is strife to excel at the expense of another; lowering others to set up one’s self; unholy zeal, fervently adopting a wrong cause, or supporting a good one by cruel means. Inquisitions, pretending to help true religion by torturing and burning alive those who both profess and practice it.
Wrath – Θυμοι· Turbulent passions, disturbing the harmony of the mind, and producing domestic and civil broils and disquietudes.
Strife – Επιθειαι· Disputations, janglings, logomachics, or strife about words. Seditions – Διχοστασιαι· Divisions into separate factions; parties, whether in the Church or state. Heresies – Αἱρεσεις· Factions; parties in the Church separating from communion with each other, and setting up altar against altar. The word, which is harmless in itself, is here used in a wicked sense. Insteadof αἱρεσεις, the Slavonic has σκανδαλα, scandals, offences or stumbling-blocks.
Verse 21
Envyings – Φθονοι· “Pain felt, and malignity conceived, at the sight of excellence or happiness.” A passion the most base and the least curable of all that disgrace or degrade the fallen soul. See on Romans 13:13.
Murders – Φονοι· Similarity of sound to the preceding seems to have suggested the word in this association; it wants in several MSS. Murder signifies the destruction of human life; and as he who hates his brother in his heart is ready to take away his life, so he is called a murderer. After all the casuistry of man, it does not appear that the right of taking away a human life on any pretense, except for the crime of murder belongs to any but the Maker and Judge of all men.
Drunkenness – Μεθαι· Taking more wine or any inebriating liquor than is necessary for health; whatever unfit for public, domestic, or spiritual duties; even the cares of the world, when they intoxicate the mind. See on Romans 13:13. Revellings – Κωμοι· Lascivious feastings, with obscene songs, music, etc. See on Romans 13:13.
And such like – Και τα ὁμοια τουτοις· All that proceeds from the evil passions of a fallen spirit, besides those above specified; and all that the law of God specifies and condemns. Of the which I tell you before – When I first preached the Gospel to you. As I had also told you in time past – When I paid my second visit to you; for the apostle did visit them twice. See Acts 16:6; Acts 18:23.Shall not inherit – They are not children of God, and therefore cannot inherit the kingdom which belongs only to the children of the Divine family. Now that we have knowledge of what it is we are actually confronting.
Adam Clarke describes the fruits of the Holy Spirit and the overall effect they will have in our lives as Modern Day Disciples when used as part of our demonstrated walk.
But the fruit of the Spirit – Both flesh – the sinful dispositions of the human heart and spirit – the changed or purified state of the soul, by the grace and Spirit of God, are represented by the apostle as trees, one yielding good the other bad fruit; the productions of each being according to the nature of the tree, as the tree is according to the nature of the seed from which it sprung. The bad seed produced a bad tree, yielding all manner of evil fruit; the excellent seed produced a good tree, bringing forth fruits of the most outstanding kind. The tree of the flesh, with all its evil fruits, we have already seen; the tree of the Spirit, with its excellent fruits, we shall now see.
Love – Αγαπη· An intense desire to please God, and to do good to mankind; the very soul and spirit of all true religion; the fulfilling of the law, and what gives energy to faith itself. See Galatians 5:6.
Joy – Χαρα· The exultation that arises from a sense of God’s mercy communicated to the soul in the pardon of its iniquities, and the prospect of that eternal glory of which it has the foretaste in the forgiveness of sin. See Romans 5:2..Peace – Ειρηνη· The calm, quiet, and order, which take place in the justified soul, instead of the doubts, fears, alarms, and dreadful forebodings, which every true penitent less or more feels, and must feel till the assurance of pardon brings peace and satisfaction to the mind. Peace is the first sensible fruit of the forgiveness of sin. See Romans 5:1.
Long-suffering – Μακροθυμια· Long-mindedness, bearing with the frailties and provocations of others, from the consideration that God has borne long with ours; and that, if he had not, we should have been speedily consumed: bearing up also through all the troubles and difficulties of life without murmuring or repining; submitting cheerfully to every dispensation of God’s providence, and thus deriving benefit from every occurrence.
Gentleness – Χρηστοτης· Benignity, affability; a very rare grace, often wanting in many who have a considerable share of Christian excellence. Good education and polished manners, when brought under the influence of the grace of God, will bring out this grace with great effect.
Goodness – Αγαθωσυνη· The perpetual desire and sincere study, not only to abstain from every appearance of evil but to do good to the bodies and souls of men to the utmost of our ability. But all this must spring from a good heart – a heart purified by the Spirit of God; and then, the tree is made good, the fruit must be good also.
Faith – Πιστις, here used for fidelity – punctuality in performing promises, conscientious carefulness in preserving what is committed to our trust, in restoring it to its proper owner, in transacting the business confided to us, neither betraying the secret of our friend nor disappointing the confidence of our employer.
Verse 23
Meekness – Πραοτης· Mildness, indulgence toward the weak and erring, a patient suffering from injuries without feeling a spirit of revenge, an even balance of all tempers and passions, the complete opposite to anger.
Temperance – Εγκρατεια· Continence, self-government, or moderation, principally concerning sensual or animal appetites. Moderation in eating, drinking, sleeping, etc. Several very respectable MSS., as D*EFG, with the Vulgate, most copies of the Itala and several of the fathers, add ἁγνεια, chastity. This we are sure cannot be separated from the genuine Christian character, though it may be included in the word εγκρατεια, continence or moderation, immediately preceding.
Against such there is no law – Those, whose lives are adorned by the above virtues, cannot be condemned by any law, for the whole purpose and design of the moral law of God is fulfilled in those who have the Spirit of God, producing in their hearts and lives the preceding fruits.
The gospel is a doctrine according to godliness, 1 Timothy 6:3, and is so far from giving the least countenance to sin, that it lays us under the strongest obligation to avoid and subdue it.
Matthew Henry (1662 – 1774) explains “The apostle urges that all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. If believers, who should help one another, and rejoice one another, quarrel, what can be expected but that the God of love should deny his grace, that the Spirit of love should depart, and the evil spirit, who seeks their destruction, should prevail? Happy would it be, if Believers, instead of biting and devouring one another on account of different opinions, would set themselves against sin in themselves, and in the places where they live and worship?
Believers are not to suppose that religious knowledge, or Christian privileges, gave them any right to despise unbelievers, or to disobey lawful commands, or to expose their faults to others. And such as enjoyed the privilege of living with believers, were not to withhold due respect and reverence, because they were equal in respect to religious privileges but were to serve with double diligence and cheerfulness, because of their faith in Yeshua, and as partakers of his free salvation. We are not to consent to any words as wholesome, except the words of our Lord Yeshua; to these, we must give unfeigned consent.
Matthew Henry (1662- 1774) continues “Commonly those are most proud who know least; for they do not know themselves. Hence come envy, strife, railings, evil-surmisings, disputes that are all subtlety, and of no solidity, between men of corrupt and carnal minds, ignorant of the truth and its sanctifying power, and seeking their worldly advantage.”
Thus we’re shown who and what we are being presented and in that knowledge recognize the Holy Spirit is with us and to use demonstrations and examples as the Spirit is not there for them, to decipher spoken truths.
CLOSING PRAYER by Robert
Heavenly Father, hear our cries for your instruction and heavenly gifts to prepare us to be compelling examples of your love and compassion. Bring unto us a clear mind and vision to see the seeds of temptations standing before these prisoners of Satan. That we will use your sword of truth to sever all the bindings from them. Give us the strength and knowledge to demonstrate your truth as a light for them to find your path to eternal life and peace. We pray this in your name Yeshua. Amen and Amen.
CLOSING COMMENTS by Robert Isn’t our Lord a fantastic leader who brings us all we need to recognize who and what we are about to be confronted with and how to deal with it effectively. As I ponder how Yeshua took the time from the multitudes to deal with just one person I begin to recognize the significance of grace. We have been shown how our enemy has and is stealing Grace from the worldly churches. I am closing with Matthew Henry’s (1662- 1774) comments “Those that make a trade of Christianity to serve their turn for this world will be disappointed; but those who mind it as their calling will find it has the promise of the life that now is, as well as of that which is to come. He that is godly is sure to be happy in another world; and if contented with his condition in this world, he has enough; and all truly godly people are content.“
Bring unto them a spirit of calm that any decision they are about to make in respect to a spiritual walk with you Lord would be an informed one void of emotions and worldly desires. I ask Lord that you would guardedly open their minds to receive all information the Holy Spirit will reveal as the foundation for their future decisions.

PRE-AMBLE by Robert It is quite common for a man to look upon himself as wiser and better than other men, and as fit to dictate to them. Such a one deceives himself; by pretending to what he has not, he puts a cheat upon himself and sooner or later will find the sad effects. This will never gain esteem, either with God or men. In this article, the Holy Spirit is revealing how easy it is to fall into being Prideful. He is going to show us there are two types of teachers both recognizing Yeshua, however, one messenger falls short in delivering the gospel. We will receive a lesson which was delivered by Apostle Paul 2000+ years but still applies to our walk today.
OPENING PRAYER by Robert
Father in heaven, hear our petitions, Lord, to gain your understanding, knowledge, wisdom, and patience. Teach us to discern the power within each gift Father so we may be strengthened to endure as your Apostles did to demonstrate through our conflicts your love, compassion, and forgiveness. Place your words Lord so we may rebuke the work of the enemy sharpen our sword, Father. Bring unto us Lord the spirit of meekness, and humility, remove the spirit of arrogance and superiority, take from us any spirit of Pride. This we pray in your name Yeshua. Amen and Amen.
OPENING STATEMENT by Robert. In the recent article, ‘THERE CAN BE NO TRUE PEACE WITHOUT GRACE.”
The Holy Spirit revealed, “For our Salvation to have any value in God’s eyes,it must be shared.“ The following is the background, we need to consider, as related by Matthew Henry (1662 – 1774) in his introduction to the book of Philippians. He reveals what we will or may encounter when sharing our Salvation and how Paul handled it. “PHILIPPI was a chief city of the western part of Macedonia Acts 16:12. It is most remarkable among Christians for this epistle, which was written when Paul was a prisoner at Rome, AD 62.
Paul seems to have had a very particular kindness for the church at Philippi, which he himself had been instrumental in planting and, though he had the care of all the churches, he had, upon that account, a particular fatherly tender care of this. At Philippi, Paul suffered hard things he was scourged and put into stocks (Acts 16:23,24) yet he had not less kindness for the place for the hard usage he met with there. We must never love our friends the less for the ill-treatment which our enemies give us. This, information lead me to Philippians 1:15 where Matthew Henry (1662 – 1774) further comments on how Paul dealt with those in the Philippi church: “Paulshows the wisdom and goodness of God in his sufferings. These things made him known, where he would never have otherwise been known; and led some to inquire after the gospel. He suffered from false friends, as well as from enemies. How wretched the temper of those who preached Christ out of envy and contention, and to add affliction to the bonds that oppressed this best of men! The apostle was easy in the midst of all. Since our troubles may tend to the good of many, we ought to rejoice.
Paul reveals to what depth the “Modern Day Disciples” will be required to shift their walk in order to recognize and then demonstrate God’s love and compassion, they will need “fervent discipline, sincere dedication to Yeshua and complete acceptance of His Fathers Laws.” Here is where the importance of God’s earlier call for us to do an edit on our walk and return to His Law’s, comes into play and reveals the importance of how we see, understand and stage our relationship with Yeshua and God the Father. The following link will refresh your memory or for those who have not read it bring forward pertinent information to understand our position today.
https://romboughrobert.wordpress.com/2017/06/14/truth-will-be-evil-lies-will-be-truth/ John Calvin’s (1509 – 1564) commentary on Philippians 1:15 – 17 gives us a better understanding of how we as Modern Day disciples should be staging our walk even though it has been 2000 + years. “Here is another fruit of Paul’s bonds – some by maintaining their position, others by becoming more eager to teach – but even those who wished him evil were on another account stirred up to publish the
gospel. Some, I say, from contention. Paul reveals there are two classes of men that are stirred up by his bonds to preach Yeshua. The one influenced by contention, that is, by depraved affection. The other by pious zeal, as being desirous to maintain along with him the defence of the gospel. The former does not preach Yeshua purely, because it was not a right zeal. Those who truly loved Yeshua reckoned that it would be a disgrace to them if they did not associate themselves with Paul as his companions when maintaining the cause of the gospel. We must act in such a manner, as to give a helping hand, as far as possible, to the servants of Yeshua when in difficulty, for the defence of the Gospel. For since Yeshua confers upon us so great an honour, what excuse shall we have, if we shall be traitors to his cause. Or what may we expect, if we betray it by our SILENCE?
Adam Clarke (1760 -1832) in his commentaries on Philippians 1:15 gives us a glimpse of the foundation of those spoken of in the prior paragraph.“Some preach Yeshua (Christ) even of envy and strife. These must have been the Judaizing teachers, who insisted on the necessity of connecting the Mosaic rites with the Christian institutions; and, probably, denounced Paul to the Jews dwelling at Rome as not only an enemy to the law and the prophets but also as a very imperfect Christian, because he declared strongly against the doctrine of circumcision and no doubt endeavoured to prejudice him with the heathen Romans.” Continuing, Adam Clarke (1760 -1832) goes on to expose them for what they are and how they will appear to be.“The word preach is not to be taken here as implying that the different persons mentioned were what we call preachers of the Gospel. All that we can understand from Paul’s use of the word is, that they proclaimed Yeshua as the promised Messiah, espoused the Christian cause, and contended, whether in public or private, that this Yeshua (Jesus) was the Christ; but nothing of this kind appears to have been intended in reference to the conversation of sinners.” As “Modern Day Disciples” we must be cautious never to give into what Matthew Henry (1662 -1774) is describing “In the way to eternal happiness, we must expect to be assaulted and sifted by Satan. If he cannot destroy, he will try to disgrace or distress us. Nothing more certainly forebodes a fall, in a professed follower of Christ, than self-confidence, with disregard to warnings, and contempt of danger. Unless we watch and pray always, we may be drawn in the course of the day into those sins which we were in the morning most resolved against.” Matthew Henry (1662 – 1774) enlightens how our walk should proceed on the narrow path “Kindness is the law of Christ’s kingdom, the lesson of his school, the livery of his family. Several motives to brotherly love are mentioned.
If you expect or experience the benefit of God’s compassion to yourselves, be compassionate one to another. It is the joy of disciples to see people like-minded. Yeshua came to humble us, let there not be among us a spirit of pride. We must be severe upon our own faults, and quick in observing our own defects, but ready to make favourable allowances for others. We must kindly care for others, but not be busy-bodies in other men’s matters. Neither inward nor outward peace can be enjoyed, without lowliness of mind. CLOSING COMMENTS by Robert We find that even while in prison Paul had his influence on the churches through the letters he sent forward. It becomes apparent our focus must always be demonstrating God’s Love compassion and Grace. We saw that even through his sufferings to bring Yeshua’s teachings forward, Paul’s demonstrations and examples brought attention to his ability to endure and continue the teachings of Yeshua. This is an example for the Modern Day Disciples to recognize no matter what the world presents in opposition to your efforts in demonstrating Yeshua’s teachings because you go forward your efforts will bear fruit as it did for Paul. I was presented with a post on Facebook “A question was asked in the Bible, ‘how can one achieve greatness and the answer was; find a way to serve the many because of service to many leads to greatness”. I wrote back “The best work for our Lord is to be living examples of the words you speak. Words only entice, examples create desire and want of what you have demonstrated by those words, freedom, and peace. Experience shows if you live what you speak by putting forward a good example you will draw many to the light you have emitted into the darkness. For example; light a match in the darkness of night, watch what occurs.” This question and answer is the best example I can offer for the wisdom the Holy Spirit has brought forward of what makes our walk affective. I see why the Holy Spirit calls for our demonstrations to match our walk as Yeshua did. He lived what he spoke, he brought forward the power of His words through obedience to God his Father. The task of being a living example of walking in Yeshua’s footsteps is not without trials and tribulations. Our demonstrations of how we deal with the trials and tribulations will put us before those in the world as living examples of how God deals with us, for those who cannot understand. Like Paul, our sufferings will allow us to be otherwise known. This puts us in the position now to share with those desiring for themselves what we have. Now, here is the most important part of this article at no time can we believe we are in any stretch of the imagination superior, more intelligent, seen in God’s eyes as extra special, as these thoughts answer the question; “Pride,” Does It Belong To You? Paul offered this answer which we saw earlier but will see it again as a final reminder of what our walk should look like. “Kindness is the law of Christ’s kingdom, the lesson of his school, the livery of his family. Several motives for brotherly love are mentioned. If you expect or experience the benefit of God’s compassion to yourselves, be compassionate one to another.”
