OBSERVATION!

The information offered in order to accentuate what Yahewa is about to bring forward currently was described by Isaiah, just before the fall of Jerusalem in 705BC. Note the similarity of the warning issued to our assemblies of today!

Jerusalem, then, shall be reduced to the very dust, and whine and whimper in it (like a sick lion, if this be the figure the prophet is pursuing), when suddenly it is “the surge of” her foes-literally “thy strangers”-whom the prophet sees as “small dust, and as passing chaff shall the surge of tyrants be; yea, it shall be in the twinkling of an eye, suddenly. From Jehovah of hosts shall she be visited with thunder and with earthquake and a great, noise, -storm-wind, and tempest and the flame of fire devouring.

Isaiah was dealing with people in whom political security and religious formalism had stifled both reason and conscience. He sought to rouse them by a startling message, such as has  been delivered today and confirmed!

Isaiah was warning the leaders of Israel not to reach out to Egypt as an ally to protect them but to turn to God as that decision was to prove to be a disastrous decision.

The comparison of  Isaiah’s warning for today’s Ecclesia is not to turn unto the world’s wisdom but turn unto Yeshua, as the consequences of dealing with the world’s wisdom would be dire as it proved to be for the Israelites of Isaiah’s time! They ended up in 400+ years of slavery. Whereas those of today’s Assemblies would end up in the bondage of Satan as slaves mired in sin and eventually the second death.

COMMENTARY!

They were drunk with the love of pleasures, with prejudices against religion, and with the corrupt principles they had imbibed.

Like drunken men, they know not what they do or say, nor where they are going. They are not sensible of the divine rebukes they are under. They have beaten me, and I felt it not, says the drunkard, Proverbs 23:35.

God speaks to them once, yea, twice, but, like men drunk, they perceive it not, they understand it not, but forget the law.

They stagger in their counsels, are unstable and unsteady, and stumble at everything that lies in their way. There is such a thing as spiritual drunkenness

It is yet more strange that God himself should have poured out upon them a spirit of deep sleep, and closed their eyes (Isaiah 29:10), that he who bids them awake and open their eyes should yet lay them to sleep and shut their eyes but it is a way to righteous judgment, to punish them for their loving darkness rather than light, their loving sleep. When God by his prophets called them, they said, Yet a little sleep, a little slumber and therefore he gave them up to strong delusions, and said, Sleep on now. This is applied to the unbelieving Jews, who rejected the gospel of Christ, and were justly hardened in their infidelity, till wrath came upon them to the uttermost. Romans 11:8, God has given them the spirit of slumber.

And we have reason to fear it is the woeful case of many who live in the midst of gospel light.

It is very sad that this should be the case with those who were their prophets, and rulers, and seers, that those who should have been their guides were themselves blindfolded and it is easy to tell what the fatal consequences will be when the blind lead the blind. This was fulfilled when, in the latter days of the Jewish church, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, were the great opposers of Christ and his gospel, and brought themselves under a judicial infatuation.

The sad effect of this was that all the means of conviction, knowledge, and grace, which they enjoyed, were ineffectual, and did not answer the end (Isaiah 29:11,12):

The vision of all the prophets, true and false, has become to you as the words of a book, or letter, that is sealed up you cannot discern the truth of the real visions and the falsehood of the pretended ones.”

RATIONALIZATION & JUSTIFICATION DEFINED!

The line is stretched so far down that even the lowest may enter; yet it runs up so high that those have no place in it who are satisfied with mere average morality, who count it enough to be free from vices that degrade the man, and innocent of crimes that offend the state.

Most respectable citizens of an earthly commonwealth such honest men may be; but no kingdom of heaven is open to such as they.

The foundations of common morality are of course assumed, as is made specially evident; but it would have been quite misleading had the Herald of heaven’s kingdom said “Blessed are the honest” or “Blessed is the man who tells no lies”

The common virtues are quite indispensable; but there must be something beyond these-first a sense of need of something far higher and better, then a hungering and thirsting after it, and as a necessary consequence some attainment of it, in order to gain citizenship in the kingdom of heaven and enjoyment of its blessedness.

We cannot follow the beatitudes one by one; but glancing over them we see, running through them all, this great truth-that blessedness is essentially spiritual, that it depends not so much on a man’s condition as on his character, not so much on what he has as on what he is. It needs no great effort of imagination to see that if men in general were to make it their main object and endeavour in life to be what they ought to be, rather than to scramble for what they can get, this earth would speedily become a moral paradise.
