A MESSAGE TO DISCERN! WHY DO SO MANY CLING TO THE WORLD!

SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION!

Titus 2:12 KJV
teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world,

OBSERVATION OF THE VERSE!

The doctrine of grace and salvation by the gospel, is for all ranks and conditions of men. It teaches to forsake sin; to have no more to do with it. An earthly, sensual conversation suits not a heavenly calling.

Redemption from sin and sanctification of nature go together and make peculiar people unto God, free from guilt and condemnation, and purified by the Holy Spirit.

COMMENTARY!

This doctrine teaches to consciencely make, known that which is good. We must look to God in Christ as the object of our hope and worship.

A gospel conversation must be a godly conversation. See our duty in very few words; denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, living soberly, righteously, and godly, notwithstanding all snares, temptations, corrupt examples, ill usage, and what remains of sin in the believer’s heart, with all the hinderances it presents as fleshly pleasures.

It teaches to look for the glories of another world. At, and in, the glorious appearing of Christ, the blessed hope of Christians will be complete: To bring us to holiness and happiness was the end of Christ’s death.

Jesus Christ, our Saviour, saves us as God. He loved us and gave himself for us; and what can we do less than love and give up ourselves to him in obedience by discerning the pleasures of the world our flesh presents, and with integrity rebuke them in Yeshua’s name!

I am stating here that the previous statement clarifies what decisions we must make when faced by those remaining pleasures in our hearts currently presenting themselves, not only as a temptation; but are being presented  as pleasurable and seemingly compatible to a believer’s walk.

All Scripture is profitable and furnishes all parts of duty and the proper discharge of them. Let us inquire whether our whole dependence is placed upon that grace, which saves the lost, pardons the guilty, and sanctifies the unclean. Showing the further we are removed from boasting of fancied good works, or trusting in them, so that we glory in Christ alone, the more zealous we will be to abound in sound works pleasing to God and not our flesh.

Temptations could not prevail, were it not for man’s own corruption; but true Christians make the will of God, not their own lust or desires, the rule of their lives and actions.

True conversion makes a marvellous change in the heart and life. It alters the mind, judgment, affections, and conversation. When a man is truly converted, it is very grievous to him to think how the time of his past life had been spent.

One sin draws on another. Six sins are here mentioned, which have dependence one upon another. It is a Christian’s duty, not only to keep from gross wickedness, but also from things that lead to sin or appear evil. The gospel had been preached to those since dead, who, by the proud and carnal judgment of wicked men, were condemned as evil-doers, some even suffering death.

But being quickened to Divine life by the Holy Spirit, they lived to God as his devoted servants. Let not believers care, though the world scorns and reproaches them.

The things of the world may be desired and possessed for the uses and purposes which God intended, and they are to be used by his grace, and to his glory; but believers must not seek or value them for those purposes to which sin abuses them.

The world draws the heart from God; and the more the love of the world prevails, the more the love of God decays.

The things of the world are classed according to the three ruling inclinations of depraved nature

1. The lust of the flesh, of the body: wrong desires of the heart, the appetite of indulging all things that excite and inflame sensual pleasures

2. The lust of the eyes: the eyes are delighted with riches and rich possessions; this is the lust of covetousness

3. The pride of life: a vain man craves the grandeur and pomp of a vain-glorious life; this includes thirst after honour and applause.

The things of the world quickly fade and die away; desire itself will ere long fail and cease, but holy affection is not like the lust that passes away. The love of God shall never fail.

Many vain efforts have been made to evade the force of this passage by limitations, distinctions, or exceptions. Many have tried to show how far we may be carnally-minded, and love the world; but the plain meaning of these verses cannot easily be mistaken. Unless this victory over the world is begun in the heart, a man has no root in himself, but will fall away, or at most remain an unfruitful professor.

Yet these vanities are so alluring to the corruption in our hearts, that without constant watching and prayer, we cannot escape the world, or obtain victory over the god and prince of it.

Matthew 14:30-31 KJV
But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, “Lord, save me!” [31] And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand and caught him and said unto him, “O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?
