2 Peter 1:5-7 NKJV
But also, for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, [6] to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, [7] to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
Hope, in the world’s phrase, refers only to an uncertain good, for all worldly hopes are built upon sand, and the earthly hopes of heaven are blind and groundless conjectures. But the hope of the sons of the living God is a living hope, not only as to its object but also its effect. It enlivens and comforts us in all distresses and enables us to overcome all difficulties.
Mercy is the spring of all this, yea, great mercy, and manifold mercy. And this well-grounded hope of salvation is an active and living principle of obedience in the believer’s joy is the remembrance of the happiness laid up for him. It is incorruptible; it cannot come to nothing; it is an estate that cannot be spent. Also undefiled, this signifies its purity and perfection. And it fadeth not; is not sometimes more or less pleasant, but ever the same, still like itself.
All possessions here are stained with defects, and failing modesty, still something is wanting: fair houses have sad cares flying about the gilded ceiling roofs; soft beds and full tables are often filled with sick bodies and uneasy stomachs. All possessions are stained, either in getting or in using them. How ready we are to turn the things we possess into occasions and instruments of sin and to think there is no liberty or delight in their use without abusing them! Possessions are uncertain and soon pass away, like flowers and plant’s. That must be laid up in heaven. Happy are those whose hearts the Holy Spirit sets on this inheritance. God not only gives his people grace but preserves them unto glory.
Evil pursues sinners and entangles them in snares, out of which they cannot free themselves. Now, in their distress, their many gods and many altars stand them in no stead. And those whose own prayers will not be heard cannot expect a benefit from the prayers of others. Their profession of religion shall prove of no use. When trouble came upon them, they made this their confidence, but God has rejected it. His altar shall yield them no satisfaction.
The remembrance of God’s former favours to them shall be no comfort under troubles, and his remembrance of them shall be no argument for their relief. Every sin against the Lord is a sin against us, t will be found eventually.
Justification by faith and sanctification by the Holy Ghost cannot be separated, and both are the gift of God. We have great cause to bless God that we have heard the gospel. May we have that faith which the great Searcher of hearts approves and attests by the seal of the Holy Spirit. Then our hearts and consciences will be purified from the guilt of sin, and we shall be freed from the burdens some try to lay upon the disciples of Christ.
When we see our call clear to any service, we should not be perplexed with doubts and scruples arising from prejudices or former ideas. We should not covet to eat our spiritual morsels alone.
It ought to be both given and taken as kindness and respect to our kindred and friends to invite them to join us in religious exercises. We are right in our aims in attending a gospel ministry when we do it regarding the Divine appointment requiring us to make use of that ordinance. How seldom are ministers called to speak to such companies, however small, in which it may be said that they are all present in the sight of God to hear all things commanded of God!
